Title
Synthesis of well-defined ADP-ribosylated biomolecules
Speaker
Hans Kistemaker (LIC) was a PhD student in the group Bio-organic Synthesis at LIC. His supervisor was Gijs van der Marel. Hans presented his thesis entitled: 'Synthesis of well-defined ADP-ribosylated biomolecules' last Wednesday, 10 May. He received his PhD cum laude.
Abstract
The post-translational modification of proteins known as adenosine diphosphate ribosylation (ADPr) is involved in a wide variety of important biological processes and is also associated with carcinogenesis and the process of aging. Therefore, a better understanding of the biology of ADP-ribosylation is crucial for the development of novel therapeutics. To facilitate this research, the availability of well-defined ADP-ribosylated biomolecules is essential and the synthesis of these molecules was the main goal of this research.

Title
Levels diagnostics: infection diagnosis on a chip
Speakers
Coen Breedveld and Mark Schoonderwoerd (both Science Based Business students) took part in the finals of the Philips Innovation Awards on Monday 8 May. Their Leiden venture, Levels Diagnostics, was selected as the winner of the €10.000,- price in the category of ‘Rough Diamond’.
