Degenerations of curves
David Holmes (MI) is an assistant professor in the Number theory and algebraic geometry group at the Mathematical Institute. His research interests are number theory, algebraic geometry and recently a little bit of string theory. Recently he has worked on many problems related to degenerations in higher-dimensional families of curves and abelian varieties — existence of Néron models, behaviour of torsion points, height jumping, and the compactification of the double ramification cycle.
Algebraic curves play an important role in many fields, from string theory to cryptography. In my talk I will take a look at some of the phenomena that arise when such curves degenerate.
Why machine learning is more than deep learning (and artificial intelligence is more than machine learning)
Peter Flach (University of Bristol) is professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bristol. An internationally leading researcher in the areas of mining highly structured data and the evaluation and improvement of machine learning models using ROC analysis, he has also published on the logic and philosophy of machine learning, and on the combination of logic and probability. He is author of Simply Logical: Intelligent Reasoning by Example (John Wiley, 1994) and Machine Learning: the Art and Science of Algorithms that Make Sense of Data (Cambridge University Press, 2012). Peter is visiting LIACS this week.
