Sport Data Science
Arie-Willem de Leeuw (LIACS) is a post-doctoral researcher in the Data Science group at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS). His main research interest is sports analytics.
'In recent years, Data Science has become more and more important in the context of professional sports and movement. In this talk, I will give an overview of current projects at the Sport Data Center, where Data Scientists from LIACS work together with several sport organizations. I will mainly focus on analyzing ball possession switches in football and recognition of archery shots in images.'
New insight into functional amyloid in Streptomyces coelicolor
Wen Yang (IBL) is a PhD student in the lab of Ariane Briegel at the Microbial Biotechnology & Health cluster of IBL. In the past two years her primary research focus has been on the structure and assembly of functional amyloids.
'Streptomyces coelicolor, among a variety of microorganism, actively employs amyloid proteins for forming complex, yet highly ordered extracellular matrix through its life cycle. By using a comprehensive biophysical approach combined with in vivo characterisation, we identified different amyloid forming propensity of the two homologous rodlin proteins that are indispensable in cell wall decoration. Furthermore, based on the newly discovered function of the rodlin proteins, we proposed a new model for spore morphogenesis in S. coelicolor.'
