How global change drives the emergence of vector borne diseases
Maarten Schrama (CML) is a postdoc in the department of Conservation Biology at CML. Maarten’s research intends to understand how human pressures affect the structure of the aquatic food web. Human pressures affect ecosystem in a wide range of ways, and often interact. Different pressures include the use of pesticides and other chemicals, eutrophication of water bodies, and changes in land use. Maarten uses the wealth of information in the Netherlands gathered in different databases to investigate the links between pesticides, nutrient pollution, and aquatic biodiversity. Also, he plans to set up field and lab experiments to test hypotheses that are generated using the databases.
Towards synthetic cell division
Marileen Dogterom (TU Delft and LION) is professor and group leader in the department of Bionanoscience at the Kavli institute (TU Delft) and professor of atomic and molecular physics at LION. The research objective of her group is to gain a quantitative understanding of the physics behind cytoskeleton-based processes. This is achieved through a combination of in vitro experiments in simplified physically and biochemically controlled microfabricated environments, theoretical modelling and, increasingly, experiments in living cells. This summer, she was appointed as Medical Delta professor.
