What are the main drivers behind the turmoil In Turkey?
For the last few months, Turkey seems to dominate the news: unsettling domestic developments, including a failed attempt for a coup d’état, an ongoing civil war with the PKK, the situation in neighbouring Syria, diplomatic clashes with Russia and with the EU on top of having to cope with 3 million refugees and still counting.
Criticism on how the government and notably the president, Tayyip Erdogan is handling this complex situation is on the rise, but has never been far away, also in The Netherlands. Not only the precarious situation of individual freedoms within Turkey is cause for concern, but also the way in which Ankara seems to wield influence on the attitude of Dutch Turks vis-à-vis the supporters in Holland of the alleged perpetrators of the failed coup d’état, i.e. the Fettulah Gülen movement.
What are the main drivers behind this turmoil and how can the country return to some sort of normalcy? These questions will be dealt with in a lecture given by Lily Sprangers.
