Title: Plant-mediated intraspecific interactions between thrips in tomato
Speaker: Rocio Escobar-Bravo (IBL, Plant Sciences & Natural products)
Rocio is a post doc researcher in the group of Plant Ecology and Phytochemistry at IBL. Her research interest revolves around the constitutive and inducible plant defenses that determine the outcome of plant-insect interactions. For this, the central model organisms are tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and the Western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis. In addition, as light plays a crucial role in modulating plant physiology and metabolome, she is also interested in deciphering the influence of light quality and quantity in these interactions.
Title: From active matter to artificial cells: a mechanical insight into the fabric of life
Speaker: Luca Giomi (LION, Theoretical Physics)
Luca is an assistant professor in Soft & Bio Mechanics at the Theoretical Physics department in LION. He is interested in understanding the mechanics of soft materials, of which biological materials are prominent examples. Soft materials are those that can be easily deformed by external stress, electromagnetic fields or just thermal fluctuations: in other words everything that is wet, squishy or floppy. To pursue this, a combination of analytical techniques, numerical simulations are used and, from time to time, some simple experiment. Luca was awarded a VIDI grant from NWO last month.
