Title An efficient procedure to analyse various types of queues
Speaker Laurens Smit (MI)
Laurens Smit is a PhD student in the Operations Research (OR) group of the Mathematical Institute. He will defend his PhD thesis in May.
Abstract
In this talk we will discuss a particular type of networks applications: queues. Many queueing systems are present around us and occur frequently. The analysis of the behaviour of these systems is a broad research area, wherein it is particularly important to find the average waiting time for a customer in a queue and the average length of a queue. We describe how to model a queue as a network and show how one can use this network to compute the performance of a queue. We will discuss our own research that focuses on a specific characteristic present in the structure of many networks and explain how we can exploit this characteristic to analyse a queue efficiently and fast.
Second Lecture
Title Exoplanets and the search for extraterrestrial life
Speaker Ignas Snellen ( Leiden Observatory)
Ignas is full professor in observational astrophysics at the Leiden Observatory. His group develops observation and data-reduction techniques for ground-based telescopes, particularly geared to be used for the future extremely large telescopes (ELT). Important successes have been reached using high-dispersion spectroscopy, in which the planet light is separated from the much brighter starlight using its unique spectral features combined with time-differential and/or spatial separation techniques - techniques often developed in his team. Most of the time, the telescopes on La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain) and those from the European Southern Observatory (La Silla & Paranal, Chile) are used for this research. Ignas received an ERC advanced grant last month for his research proposal on exoplanets
