Every year, the Marcha das Vadias (slutwalk) organises a protest march in Brasília and other Brasilian cities. Young women dress up like sluts and march in the dangerous inner city, a place that is usually off limit. They demand attention for the criminalisation of women, the political influence of evangelic Christians, the illegality of abortion, and the persuasive ‘beauty dictatorship’ with which they struggle, also in their personal lives.
In this talk, Erik Bähre will offer an ethnographic account of this movement, explore how debates on feminism emerged, and how gender issues are strongly entangled with racial and economic inequalities.
Erik Bähre is assistant professor at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University.
