Roy de Kleijn heeft een M.Sc. in Computer Science behaald aan Georgia Tech (Verenigde Staten) en een M.Sc. in Cognitieve Neurowetenschappen behaald aan Universiteit Leiden, waar hij is afgestudeerd op de scriptie Computational modeling of individual differences using stochastic information accumulation models bij Jay McClelland op Stanford University (Verenigde Staten). Hij heeft zijn Ph.D. behaald met zijn proefschrift Control of complex actions in humans and robots, begeleid door Bernhard Hommel. Hij is momenteel verbonden aan Universiteit Leiden als universitair docent, waar hij onderzoek doet en doceert in kunstmatige intelligentie, computational modeling, kunstmatige neurale netwerken, en (cognitieve) psychologie.
